Ding Dong the Dirty Old Bastard's Dead. . . .But. . .

The FBI poster for Public Enemy Number One has been updated, there is dancing in the streets, and the ole dirty bastard's body is now fish food. So I should be happy and relaxed that we are a safer world because of his death.

So why do I still feel uneasy?

Because terrorism is still out there. Maybe one of the heads is gone, but somehow that monster is still alive and thriving. That means someday, sometime, when we least expect it, another terrorist cell is going to strike back. As the saying goes, payback is a bitch. And terrorists are the bitchiest of payback dispensers. Even more bitchy than me!

All kidding aside, when I first heard the word on radio on the way home from work Sunday night, a part of me wondered if this was some kind of big, nasty, delayed April Fool's joke. Let's face it, OBL avoided capture for more than a decade or so (if you count the 1993 World Trade Center bombing). He has a fanatical following, and he knew the Middle East like I used to know my grandparents' farm in Southern Indiana. That was his domain, and he felt safe.

So, for a little while, I felt a little uncertain that it was true. When the President went on air and announced it was real, I still couldn't believe it. When the FBI updated the 'wanted' poster, I still have a hard time believing it. I'm getting there. Maybe I'll be more comfortable with accepting the concept when 'The National Inquirer' starts publishing OBL sightings, similiar to the Elvis sightings.

The main thing to remember through all this rambling is that we as a country are still not safe. Maybe we never really were safe, but our country seemed invulnerable until 9/11/2001. That's the date that our invulnerable facade was literally blown away.

Face it folks, we lost our innocence that day. Once taken, it can never be regained. We still need to be watchful. That isn't an excuse for racial profiling those of the Muslim faith or any other foreigner! We can't let down our vigiliance while we're dancing in the streets.

So enjoy the fact that the ODB is dead despite my bein' the party pooper. I'm just sayin', let's not forget what happened nearly 10 years ago. We still should be afraid. Very afraid of payback.

End of line.
